When should I plant dahlia tubers?

The best time to plant dahlia tubers is after the risk of hard frost has passed and the soil has started to warm up. In most parts of Europe, this is usually from late April to May.

Dahlias are warm-season plants and do not tolerate freezing temperatures. If you want to get an earlier start, you can pre-sprout the tubers indoors or in a greenhouse 4–6 weeks before planting them outside.

For the best results, wait until the soil is warm, the weather is settled, and there is no significant risk of frost. If a late frost is expected after planting, protect young plants with fleece or another suitable cover.
